THE VIEW
Alex Ventling (NZ/CH) – piano, synth, OP-1
Phelan Burgoyne (UK) – drums, drum machine
Hayden Chisholm (featuring) (NZ) – alto saxophone, putorino, koauau
The View presents compositions by both pianist Alex Ventling and drummer Phelan Burgoyne, in a journey through lyrical improvisations, choral-like piano movements, synth empowered grooves and traditional maori flutes. Their music blurs the lines between composition and improvisation, where deep listening is paramount. The intimate bass-less setting gives the band freedom and space to explore and improvise together, and a vast sound-world of possible colours and textures. The View is currently touring with New Zealand alto saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist Hayden Chisholm.
Alex met Phelan abroad during the European Jazz Masters program, the two having worked together in a plethora of musical contexts for the last 10 years. The connection built in musical friendship is unmistakable in their sensitive interplay, resulting in music clear and honest with impressive maturity and humility. Their debut album was recorded in summer 2023 in Trondheim, (using Alex’s own historical Steinway & Sons Model S from 1940).
